ART 101: Art, Meaning and Media (3)

A broad introduction to concepts, vocabulary, media, and history of art that reveals universal qualities in human aesthetic responses, as well as the special differences that define societies and cultures through examples from the past, the present, and from diverse cultures. ART 201: Hist Western Art (3)

ART 205: Visual Design (3)

A dynamic approach to surface rendering through color manipulation and creative problem solving, including color sstems, basic principles of design, composition, and visual expression. (Offered every even-year spring semester.)

ART 215: Drawing I (3)

Studio course in creating illusions of form, light and space on a two-dimensional urface through manipulation of tone. (Offered every even-year fall semester.)

Foundation study of painting, including color theory. Emphasis on direct observation and practce. Exposure to paintings and artists of the past. (Offered every even-year spring semester.)

Clay work involving hand-building and basic glazing techniques for funtional and non-functional objects. (Offered every odd fall semester.)

ART 245: Printmaking I (3)

The techniques of creating printed images from blocks of wood, linoleum, plexiglass, and other techniques explored for their expressive and aesthetic potential. (Offered as needed.)

ART 255: Sculpture I (3)

A studio course in the study of form and space relationships as applied to sculpture, presenting basic ttechniques. Process to involve work in wood, clay and plaster. (Offered every odd spring semester.)

ART 282: Photography (3)

An introductory course in camera functions and basic darkroom techniques. Emphasis will be placed on formal composition, aesthetics, and proper methods of processing photographic mmaterials and chemicals. This course is designed for students with little or no experience in photography. An additional course fee will be charged. (Offered every fall semester).

ART 295: Introductory Topics in Art (1)

Prerequisite: to be determined by the Division of Humanities and Fine Arts. An introductory study of a specific topic within art. Intended for freshmen and sophomores, or for students with little or no background in art. The student may repeat the course, but not the topic. (Offered as needed.)

ART 301: Visiting Artists: Special Topic (3)

Established artists are invited to teach a course specific to their professional artistic discipline. Possible topics include: watercolor, graphic design, illustration, digital imaging, weavinng, interior design, industrial design, children's books illustration, film/video art, collage, portrait painting, etc. Students may repeat the course, but not the topic. Prerequisite: ART 235. Basic wheel-throwing techniques; problems in functional and non-functional construction; combining techniques; glaze chemistry; and kiln firing.(Offered every odd fall semester.)

A course in the history of aesthetic theory and practice regarding the visual and verbal arts. A substantial portion of the course will be devoted to the applicattion of aesthetic principles and theories to concrete problems in the plastic arts and the written work. Also listed as ENG 385. ART 445: Senior Project (3)

Prerequisite: senior visual and verbal arts major or consent of the instructor. Student works independently and in consultation with a faculty member to generate an approved self-defined project that marries the visual and verbal arts. The project serves as the capstone course for this major. Also listed as ENG 445. (Offered every semester as needed.)

ART 460: Internship in Visual and Verbal Art (12)

Prerequisite: senior visual and verbal arts major or consent of the instructor. Supervised field work in an approved setting for a minimum of two hours per week per credit hourfor 14 weeks or its equivalent in total hours. Completion of a formal project or paper under the guidance of a faculty member is required. (Offered every semester as needed.)
