CHM 112: General Chemistry II (4)
Prerequisite: CHM 111
This is the second course of the two-course sequence in general chemistry. It covers advanced bonding concepts, chemical kinetics, and thermodynamics. Solution equilibria, solubility and complex ion equilibria, and electrochemistry also are important components of the course. Laboratory work stresses quantitative analysis using traditional gravimetric and volumetric techniques, as well as instrumental

CHM 206: Organic Chemistry I (4)
Prerequisite: C- or better in CHM 112 or permission of instructor
Principles of covalent bonding as they apply to aliphatic and aromatic systems, including Lewis structures, molecular geometry, and bond polarity. Analytical techniques such as ultraviolet and infrared spectroscopy are used to investigate structure. Major emphasis is placed on the knowledge of nomenclature and functional group chemistry. An introduction to reaction mechanisms and stereochemistry is provided. Laboratory work stresses functional groups, separation techniques, and qualitative analysis. Lecture and laboratory. CHM 207: Organic Chemistry II (4)
Prerequisite: CHM 206
Synthesis and analysis of organic compounds. Nuclear magnetic resonance and mass spectroscopy are used as analysis tools in the identification of unknowns. Insights into electrophilic and nucleophilic reaction mechanisms. Laboratory emphasizes synthetic schemes and qualitative organic analysis. (Offered every even-year spring semester.)

CHM 315: Analytical Chemistry (4)
Prerequisite: Grade of “B” or higher in MAT 102 or math placement score of 3; grade of “C” or higher in CHM 112
Fundamentals of quantitative chemical analysis. Gravimetric, volumetric, and spectroscopic determinations relevant to acid-base, complexometric, potentiometric equilibria. Lecture stresses the theory of multiple equilibria. Laboratory stresses hands-on, multiple determinations. The analytical chemistry of environmentally—and forensically—significant problems forms a major part of the course. The understanding and proper use of descriptive statistics is stressed throughout the course. (Offered every odd fall semester).

Instruction in critical reading of journal articles on original research and use of current techniques for research into scientific literature. Students will explore graduate school and career option. Each student will develop and present a substantial review paper on a focused topics or question in a scientific discipline of biology, biochemistry or environmental science as appropriate for his/her major and concentration. CHM 450: Senior Seminar in Natural Science (2)
Prerequisite: CHM 390
Instruction in analysis and presentation of original research. Each student will analyze and interpret data collected from a project executed as part of an upper-level course, junior or senior Field Period experiences, summer research internship or BIO/ENV/CHM 499 Senior Research in a specific discipline of biology, biochemistry or environmental science as appropriate for his/her major and concentration. Each student will prepare a public presentation of his/her research. This is considered the capstone course for students completing majors within the natural sciences.
