COM 122: Intro to Communication (3)

Prerequisite:
A survey of communication theory and activities, including verbal, nonverbal and mediated communication. Provides an introduction to the field of communication studies. (Offered every fall semester.)

COM 201: Inter/Group Communictn Skills (3)

Prerequisite:
Provides an introduction to the theory and practice of interpersonal and group communication. The course emphasizes experiential learning, as students apply theoretical concepts to a variety of interpersonal and group discussion exercises. As they become familiar with principles of communication, students will put those principles into practice, learning specific applications of communication techniques to work in group settings. Oral communication formats covered in the course include the panel discussion, symposium, and leadership of meetings. (Offered every fall semester.)

COM 295: Introductory Topic in Communication (1-3)

Prerequisite: To be determined by the Division of Humanities and Fine Arts

COM 301: Organizational Communication (3)

Prerequisite: ENG 112 and COM 122 or consent of the instructor.
Students will become familiar with the role of communication in organizational cultures, the structure of organizational communication systems, and strategies for managing organizational communication. Through observation and case studies, students will apply theory to practical situations. (Offered every even-year spring semester.)

The study and practice of the formal writing used by professionals in the fields of business, social service, health care, and science. Techniques of journalism applied to a series of news and feature writing assignments. Attention to writing for broadcast (television and radio) and electronic (online), as well as print media. COM 350: Desktop Publishing (3)

Prerequisite: ENG 112 (Suggested prerequisite: CMP 120 or consent of the instructor).
Course is designed to acquaint students with the skills necessary to compose and produce journals, newsletters, brochures, advertising, and public relation materials, using most current word processing software and formatting packages. Students will be expected to master journalistic editing skills as well as creative methods of layout and design. (Offered every fall semester).

COM 401: Senior Practicum in Communictn (3)

Prerequisite:
Students will be placed in on- or off-campus communication internships. They will meet with the faculty evaluator on a bi-weekly basis to report on their progress. Outside readings will be assigned as needed. Evaluation will be based on a report from the student’s internship supervisor, a portfolio of the student’s work during the internship, and a final, written report by the student, integrating relevant theory with the semester’s practical experience. May be repeated. (Offered as needed.)

COM 420: Communication Theory (3)

Prerequisite: Senior standing or consent of the instructor
A study of the major theories that address group, interpersonal, organizational and mass communication, including their development, history and influence, and how these theories apply to workplace experiences. Theories to be studied will include interpersonal communication; relationships and influencing behavior; group and public communication including group decision-making and conflict management; intercultural communication; gender communication differences; mass media communication; and others.
